DIY Outdoor Blanket with Pockets

DIY Outdoor Blanket

Summer is coming to an end! This calls for one last summer trip outdoors or to the beach! This little one-yard blanket is lightweight and perfect for a quick getaway outside. You can use the pockets to hide your keys or put a rock or sand inside to hold the blanket down. The options are endless. I hope you have fun with this fun project.

Things you’ll need for this project:

  • 1 yard cheater quilt from Spoonflower
  • 1.25 yard coordinating solid color fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors

Follow the steps below to order your Fill-a-yard Cheater Quilt from the Kris Wong Design Spoonflower shop.

Visit my Spoonflower shop at Spoonflower.com/profiles/kriswongdesign

Once your order arrives from Spoonflower, you can start sewing your blanket.

Cut out 4 corner pockets, 8.5 inch on two sides and 12 inches on the third side. See reference photo.

Fold in the 11 inch side 1/2 inch twice and top stitch. Repeat on all four pockets.

Lay out all the pockets on the coordinating fabric. Use pins to hold down the corner pockets in place.

Place the cheater quilt face down on top of the coordinating fabric.

Sew all around the blanket using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave a 6 -7 inch opening to turn the blanket inside out.

Turn the blanket out inside out and top stich all around the top.

This next step is optional. Sew through the blanket to keep the two layers together. Please see suggested sewing lines on the reference photo.

Once you are done with these steps, you’re all done with your blanket is ready for the beach or the park!

I hope you enjoyed this project and enjoy the last bit our 2022 summer!

With Love and Aloha,
Kris Wong
